Teen Driver Safety Program
The goal of the “Teen Driver Safety Program” is to bring in inner-city teenagers, who are in the process of obtaining – or have already obtained -- their Learners’ Permits or Drivers’ Licenses, and provide them --- free of charge --- with the opportunity to receive training from Boston Police Academy Instructors and instruction from our Teenage Community Action Volunteer(s) from BC High on how to be a better and safer teenage driver.

The goal of the “” is to bring in inner-city teenagers, who are in the process of obtaining – or have already obtained -- their Learners’ Permits or Drivers’ Licenses, and provide them --- --- with the opportunity to receive training from Boston Police Academy Instructors and instruction from our Teenage Community Action Volunteer(s) from BC High on how to be a better and safer teenage driver.

Teens, who are interested in the program, can contact the CSO office. Officers will provide transportaion to the Boston Police Academy, (e.g. in their CSO vans), after-school or on weekends, etc., and returning the teens after the program is completed.  In addition to classroom instruction on the causes of teen driver accidentsand how to avoid them – the teens will also take a very innovative and interactive online, E-Learning Drivers Training Course in the Academy’s Computer Lab.

Teen drivers, through the assistance and stewardship of Teenage Community Action Volunteer(s) from BC High, will also be allowed to train extensively on the Academy’s newly acquired and state of the art Doron Driving Simulators.  Driving simulators have repeatedly and conclusively shown to be the most dynamic way to teach, observe, and instruct individuals on how to safely and properly operate vehicles and other moving objects (planes, helicopters, space craft, etc.)  They are used extensively by the Armed Forces, NASA, and many law enforcement agencies to train individuals and they have demonstrated dramatic successes in reducing future accidents and catastrophes.

The layout of the Academy’s Driving Simulator Room allows both the Police Instructor and the Community Action Volunteer from BC High to literally stand behind the teen driver and watch over their shoulder as they drive through simulated urban streets and intersections, replete with opposing vehicular traffic, cross traffic and simulated pedestrians.  At the end of every simulated driving exercise on the simulator, the Community Action Volunteer will be able to play back the teenager’s driving exercise and the teenager can see first hand, with the instructional guidance of an Academy Instructor, what they did right and wrong.   In addition to the regular testing and street driving assessment the teenage drivers will be exposed to driving at night, in the rain, on ice, and in a number of weather and lighting conditions (e.g. solar glare, fog, etc.  The simulator also has a computer generated Operating Under the Influence component which allows the teen to see first hand what simulated effects – based upon body weight and alcohol consumption -- even one or two drinks has on a person’s driving ability.  The teenagers will be allowed to use the simulators extensively in order to develop their driving skills and in particular, their inner city driving skills.
